Create a Cosy Home for Winter

Now is the perfect time to cosy up your place with winter homewares that are on trend and make those cold, grey days more bearable.

The word ‘hygge’ is no longer just reserved for the Danish. It’s become a worldwide phenomenon and New Zealand is no exception. Sure, we don’t have the dark, well-below-freezing winters of Denmark but it’s certainly cold enough and wet enough here to embrace hygge in our own homes.

There’s no better place to start than with cosy materials, comfy cushions and of course – lots of candles.

Here are some of my favourite winter homewares which will help bring some hygge into your home and beat the chill!

1. Shades of Grey 

Grey neutrals are the go-to colour for winter.

Whether it’s silvery branches and twigs used to make up a wintry bouquet, a soft grey knit thrown over your bed or a beautiful mohair cushion for your sofa – grey doesn’t have to be boring and monotonous.

Varying the shades of grey you use, means almost any version of the colour works well in either a dark or light interior. In particular, layers of silvery grey over dark smokey grey always looks chic.

2. Chunky Knits

Thick knitwear has always been a sophisticated staple for winter and the same goes for chunky knits in the home.

Knitted accessories are getting bolder, with huge cable knit style blankets and cushions or poufs made from XL-sized yarn.

When making a bold knitted statement, go for colours like dove grey, cream, mocha and deep burgundy red.

3. Midnight Blues 

If you prefer a darker, richer colour scheme for winter, try midnight blue, indigo and inky colours.

These colours can be used in everything from soft furnishings to tiles and feature walls. Pairing deep, dark colours with lighter, more neutral florals is an interesting contrast which prevents a room from becoming too gloomy and basement-like.

4. Luxurious Comfort

This season’s throws, rugs and cushions are all about indulgent comfort and luxurious cosiness.

Soft, plush textures add warmth and can make any space that little bit more snuggly and inviting during the winter months. There’s nothing worse than being chilly in your own home, so make sure your throws and blankets are a heavier winter weight and made with wool, mohair or cashmere to keep the heat in.

5. Keeping in Check

Tartan – who doesn’t love it?!

It’s timeless, traditional, rustic and perfectly suited to either a country or townhouse setting. Choose a red tartan print for a more traditional Scottish highland look or a lighter grey or green for a more modern take on the print.

6. Pillow Talk 

When it comes to pillows and cushions, the more the merrier during the winter months. Cushions can immediately turn a space from plain and uninviting to cosy and warm.

Throw some extra cushions onto your bed for a polished, always-made look; or cover your couch in cushions of all different sizes, shapes and colours for an inviting, relaxed, bohemian look.
